QUEBEC – Mourners in Quebec City braved a fall snowstorm on Saturday to pay their respects to former premier Bernard Landry as his body in lay in state at the provincial legislature.By 1 p.m., some 400 citizens and dignitaries had already stopped by to express their condolences to the family of the former Parti Quebecois leader, who died Tuesday at the age of 81 of a pulmonary disease. One by one, the mourners shook hands with Landry’s spouse, Chantal Renaud, who was dressed in black. In addition to Renaud, Landry leaves behind three children from a previous marriage.Landry’s daughter Pascale thanked the visitors, saying the wave of public affection that has followed her father’s death has helped the family to grieve.“It comforts us enormously,” she said.Landry’s casket arrived early in the morning, draped in a blue-and-white Quebec flag and accompanied by a police procession.Premier Francois Legault was among the first to pay his respects alongside his wife, Isabelle Brais.Afterwards, Legault described Landry as “a man of duty” who always put Quebec first.“Mr. Landry often said it: ‘the party before the men, the state before the party.’ And I have seen him often apply these two sentences in practice,” Legault said.“For him, it was always important to put the common good before the partisan interest.”Landry was a prominent figure in Quebec’s sovereignty movement for half a century, and served as the province’s premier from 2001 to 2003.The Parti Quebecois’ interim leader Pascal Berube said he hopes the politician’s death would be a rallying cry for all those who dream of an independent Quebec.“The best tribute we can pay him is to be faithful to his commitment, to be faithful to the dream of youth he had for Quebec, and that we continue to carry,” he said.Another visitation will take place Monday at Montreal’s Notre-Dame Basilica, ahead of a state funeral on Tuesday. read more
16 January 2008Climate change and the world economy are among the top development priorities for this year, the head of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced today in New York. Kemal Dervis, UNDP Administrator, began his press briefing by expressing sadness that 2007 drew to a close with the terrorist attack on the UN in Algeria, which claimed the lives of 17 of the world body’s staff. He stressed that UN staff security is paramount, and noted that host countries are primarily responsible for ensuring staff safety. The Administrator identified climate change, the world economy, governance and UN reform as the main development concerns for this year. The landmark UN-backed climate change conference in Bali, Indonesia, last month – where nearly 200 countries agreed to launch a two-year process of formal negotiations to tackle the problem of global warming – “was a modest success in the sense that there was a kind of basic agreement, but the real work is now only beginning,” he pointed out.The meeting highlighted the difficulties in ascertaining how the burden of the issue would be shared between developed and developing nations, Mr. Dervis said. For its part, UNDP will facilitate the debate surrounding climate change and showcase the different approaches – including cleaner forms of energy, energy efficiency and land use management – that can be taken to tackle the problem, he noted. As an example, UNDP has launched the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) carbon facility which gives people in wealthy countries the opportunity to invest in clean energy technology in the South. This year, the world faces a situation in which economic growth is driven by developing emerging market economies, such as China, as rich nations face the potential of an economic slowdown, the Administrator said.If developed countries experience recessions, “the challenge for development to maintain its pace despite what is happening in the rich economies will be more difficult,” he stated.Regarding governance, which comprises a large portion of UNDP’s work, Mr. Dervis observed that although democratic elections are much more frequent now than they were two decades ago, they alone are not a “sufficient condition” for democracy.“We see in many countries a tendency to perceive the democratic process as a winner-take-all process,” he said, emphasizing the importance of a system of checks and balances that prioritizes individual and minority rights. Finally, UNDP will continue with its efforts to push ahead with the “One UN” initiative, with evaluation reports having been submitted by the pilot programmes – from both UN agencies and government partners – in eight countries.Under this scheme, the various UN agencies, funds and programmes operating in each of the eight pilot countries are grouped together under one leader, programme and budget to maximize efficiency and eliminate duplication.Seeking to clarify misunderstandings about the “One UN” programme, the Administrator said that “the objective is not and has never been to merge the UN institutions into one large organization or even two or three large organizations.” Rather, it seeks to harmonize the UN’s efforts and also to encourage the donor community to pool their funds to decrease the probability of duplication.UNDP’s board will meet next week and a joint meeting of the UN funds and programmes will take place the week after, and Mr. Dervis said he hopes to promote the scope of the reforms at the gatherings. read more

The meeting of the Military Coordination Commission (MCC), held in Nairobi on Wednesday, brought together the Force Commander of the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE), Major-General Patrick Cammaert, Brigadier-General Peter Augustine Blay of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), Major-General Alemshet Degife of Ethiopia and Brigadier-General Abrahaley Kifle of Eritrea. The Force Commander, who chaired the meeting, announced that on 7 July UNMEE will formally open the bridge over the Mereb River, which connects the towns of Rama in Ethiopia and Adi Quala in Eritrea. That bridge was destroyed during the two-year war but recently repaired. The Chairman also circulated draft guidelines for handling unburied mortal remains in areas controlled by either party. The draft was prepared by UNMEE after the last MCC meeting, where the parties agreed to cooperate on the identification and return of the remains of those killed in the war to their country of origin. The Mission said today that it will revise the draft as discussed. Continued restrictions to UNMEE’s freedom of movement were also raised during the meeting. The Chairman stated that the peacekeepers still face restrictions in areas adjacent to the TSZ north of the northern boundary – a situation which impeded UNMEE from fully implementing its mandate of monitoring the two parties’ armed forces after their redeployment from the TSZ. Since UNMEE established the TSZ on 18 April, large numbers of internally displaced people have returned to their places of origin. During the meeting, the representatives of both Ethiopia and Eritrea said the needs of people from both countries who had fled their homes must be addressed. read more
WATERLOO, Ont. – Research In Motion (TSX:RIM) has hired two veterans from the mobile computing industry for the key roles of chief operating officer and chief marketing officer in a move that had been long-awaited by industry watchers. The BlackBerry maker said Tuesday that Kristian Tear, who joins RIM from Sony Mobile Communications where he served as executive vice- president, will be the new COO.Frank Boulben, the former executive vice-president of strategy, marketing and sales for LightSquared, will serve as CMO.On the Toronto Stock Exchange, RIM stock closed up 25 cents at $12.“Kristian and Frank bring extensive knowledge of the rapidly changing wireless global market and will help RIM as we sharpen our focus on delivering long-term value to our stakeholders,” said Thorsten Heins, RIM’s president and chief executive officer.“Most importantly, both Kristian and Frank possess a keen understanding of the emerging trends in mobile communications and computing.”As chief operation officer, Tear will oversee “all operational functions for handhelds and services, including research and development, products, global sales, manufacturing and supply chain,” the company said in a statement. He previously held a variety of operational leadership positions with Ericsson in Europe, Asia and Latin America.“RIM is an important player in the mobile industry and I am excited to be a part of its future,” Tear said.“I look forward to working with the talented RIM employees and harnessing their ingenuity and creativity for the benefit of more than 77 million BlackBerry users around the world. I also look forward to helping RIM attract a brand new generation of BlackBerry users.”Boulben, who also held senior positions at Vodafone Group and Orange Group, will oversee global marketing efforts at RIM.“RIM is a pioneer in the mobile world and the BlackBerry brand is a global icon,” Boulben said.“We all know how fast the mobile arena evolves and with the BlackBerry 10 platform,” he said. “I believe RIM will once again change the way individuals and enterprises engage with each other and the world around them. I could not resist the opportunity to be part of that transformation.”The company said the two will help RIM as it focuses on expanding its global customer base and preparing for the launch of its new operating platform. The BlackBerry 10 platform is seen as an important part of RIM’s attempt to compete against the likes of Apple’s iPhone and devices using Google’s Android operating system.Last week, shares in RIM plunged to their lowest level since 2003 after the Waterloo, Ont., tech giant gave a first glimpse of its much-anticipated new operating software at its annual developer conference in Orlando, Fla.The BlackBerry 10 OS prototype was handed to developers in the hope of getting them onside and writing applications for the system, but it won’t hit the market for several months.RIM is contending with relentless speculation about a potential takeover, partly due to its weak share price. Heins said plans are to move forward with developing its operating system and unveiling the new devices later this year.Analysts are generally in agreement that it’ll take a showcase of new products before any of them even consider a stronger vote of confidence. Even then, RIM will likely to face further skepticism until the first round of sales numbers are released and that probably won’t happen until early next year. by The Canadian Press Posted May 8, 2012 6:14 pm MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email Research In Motion appoints new chief operating officer, chief marketing officer read more
Research released today has shown that the automotive industry boasts the most consistently sustainable organisations. Ranked against leading companies already rated in the Dow Jones top 50 businesses for sustainability, automotive companies achieved the highest average score ahead of global brands from the energy utilities, food and beverages, ICT and oil and gas sectors. The study recognised how companies within the motor industry manage sustainability throughout their supply chains, while tackling climate change and air quality issues through ongoing investment. The Tomorrow’s Value Rating (TVR) 2013 reveals that sustainability leaders in the automotive sector continue to invest in innovation, develop partnerships and enhance their risk management so that sustainability remains central to their business performance. In studying the sustainability practices and performance of companies in each sector, the analysis concentrates on five key areas: strategy, governance, innovation, engagement and value chain. The results show that automotive businesses averaged a score of 70%, out-stripping all other sectors. In addition, the consistency of the sector was noted because, unlike in other sectors, there was a high convergence in scores, demonstrating the widespread use of sustainable practices in the sector.BMW and Ford both scored 80% and retained their sustainability leadership position, while Fiat made an impressive debut, ranking third in the TVR listings.Ivaylo Dimov, Consultant at Two Tomorrows, said, “Supply chain, carbon reduction and mobility dominate the sustainability agenda of auto manufacturers.“It is now the norm for major manufacturers to push sustainability principles and standards down the supply chain and it is becoming increasingly important for suppliers to ensure they meet these customer requirements, often including independent certification.“Incredible prototypes have been developed to improve comfort, safety and interaction with other technologies and infrastructure. The sector has developed communication technologies to increase the take-up of car-pooling and car-sharing. But big lifestyle-changing solutions are still far away.”The report concluded that pursuing innovation in isolation won’t provide all the solutions. It explained that companies should strengthen their intra- and cross-sector collaboration and search for solutions outside the boundaries of their business. The report identifies several emerging sustainability issues that industry is already well advanced in dealing with. These include ‘scope 3 CO2 emissions’ reporting, Use of sustainable materials in manufacturing, affordability of low-carbon vehicles, end-of-life recycling and recovery and building a sustainable mobility infrastructure.Click through for the full automotive report, results and findings of the main TVR 2013, and of the other TVR sector studies, as well as details of the TVR methodology.Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window) read more
He has been reportedly transferred from HMP Wakefield in West Yorkshire to HMP Belmarsh and on his release is expected to spend several months at a probation hostel, which is staffed 24 hours a day and imposes a night-time curfew. The Mayor’s office said the decision to replace Mr Cooper had been taken by the Mayor’s legal team, headed by his general counsel, Howard Carter, at Transport for London.A spokesman dismissed accusations of nepotism, stating: “We’re confident there will be no delay to the case. It’s quite normal to change barrister for different elements of a case.“The change was made before the first hearing and was entirely based on the expertise and experience required for different elements of the case. Dan Squires and Matrix chambers are specialists in this area of law.” Mr Cooper, described by the lawyers’ bible, the Legal 500, as having “forensic skills of the highest order” and “an expert in crime related matters”, has been replaced with Dan Squires QC from Matrix Chambers.Matrix happens to also be the chambers of Mr Khan’s deputy mayor with responsibility for social integration and mobility, Matthew Ryder QC. Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of LondonCredit:Simon Dawson/Reuters Mr Cooper also has experience of judicial reviews, including cases involving the Government’s deal with the DUP, the inquest into the death of weapons expert Dr David Kelly, the badger cull and the Deepcut inquest. But it is understood he was initially instructed in the Worboys case because the Mayor’s legal advisors wanted a QC with significant criminal law experience as well as that of judicial review.Mr Cooper, a visiting Professor of Law at Cardiff University and a Master of the Bench at Middle Temple, says he was given no reason for being replaced. He told The Daily Telegraph: “Despite the Mayors Legal Department being extremely happy with my work over the last three weeks, which had involved working into the early hours to get the matter case ready, I was surprised when the Mayor instructed them to sack me for no reason and to transfer the case to Matrix Chambers after I had all but completed my preparation for the hearing next week.” He added: “Nevertheless I wish them well in a case which they should do well in.”Mr Khan described the decision to free Worboys as “astonishing and deeply concerning” which “simply cannot go unchallenged”.He added: “For victims, and all Londoners, it must be properly scrutinised in the courts.”But there are now fears that sacking Mr Cooper could set back preparation to challenge the decision.Legal experts warned that the High Court is unlikely to grant the Mayor’s legal side more time to prepare, leaving it at a potential disadvantage while at the same time being forced to pay two sets of legal fees. The Mayor’s office will still have to pay Mr Cooper for the past three weeks’ work, on top of the fees to be submitted by Mr Squires.“The Court will not grant adjournments. In the exceptional cases they do they often award costs against the party causing it,” said one London lawyer.Questions are also likely to be raised as to why the Mayor’s office hired Mr Cooper in the first place, if they felt he was the wrong man for the job.Worboys, 60, a former male stripper from Rotherhithe, south east London, was convicted of 19 offences against 12 victims between 2002 and 2008, but is suspected of being linked to more than 100 attacks. John Cooper QCCredit:Peter Macdiarmid/Getty Images Fears over the prospects for a successful challenge against the release of rapist cabbie John Worboys have been raised after London Mayor Sadiq Khan sacked one of the barristers hired to present the case.Mr Khan was accused of wasting taxpayer money and risking the chances of Worboys’ victims getting justice following the decision.A hearing to press for a judicial review of the decision to free Worboys from prison after serving 10 years for drugging and sexually assaulting female passengers is to be held next week.Last Friday Mr Justice Supperstone granted an urgent application to delay his release until the further hearing could be held to decide whether the legal challenge should be allowed to go ahead.Mr Khan, along with two of Worboys’ victims, are pressing for a full judicial review of the Parole Board decision to release the rapist and for full disclosure of the 360-page dossier that led to their recommendation that he was no longer a risk to the public. But it has now emerged that the Mayoral team decided to replace John Cooper QC, the barrister leading their side’s presentation of Mr Khan’s case, despite him having spent the past three weeks preparing for the hearing Wednesday’s hearing. read more
Santa Monica-based Demand Media is one of those dot.coms traditional publishers should be paying close attention to. The network of more than 60 general and special interest sites such as eHow.com and Cracked.com draws more than 60 million unique visitors per month by leveraging user-generated content including articles and video (according to a Forbes article, Demand Media has paid out more than $20,000 to one contributor at ExpertVillage.com). It’s a model that’s working. Demand Media generates about $150 million, is profitable and there is talk of prepping for an IPO in 2009. But the biggest takeaway for traditional publishers isn’t so much how Demand has been able to leverage user-generated content as a viable business model but the way the company has developed algorithms that predict how content will perform in terms of driving traffic. Before we get too far into this, no, they aren’t sharing the secret sauce (partly for obvious proprietary concerns but also because partnering with traditional publishers is an easy meal ticket). But co-founder Shawn Colo does offer some general tips for publishers on how to take stock of their content. “You have to follow logic of ‘it’s a search-driven world,’” adds Colo. “Editorial quality has nothing to do with findability but it has everything to do with keeping the audience engaged.” 1. Can your editors write a killer headline? Great. Now make sure they can write it for the search engines too. “Our staff editors spend a lot of time working on titling and making sure articles are optimized for search,” says Colo. “For video, editors might go back in and edit the metadata to make sure they’re optimized for search as well.” 2. Collect and analyze as much data as you can, including keyword pricing. “You’ve got to have a lot of data to really prioritize which articles work well,” says Colo. “It’s a combination of a lot of things we as a company have built, a lot of what we’ve done on the registrar side, look at key word prices as a metric of how to determine value.”3. Give content the chance to mature. In today’s “go-go” Web atmosphere, constant updates are mandatory. But does that reduce the chance of people seeing it? “We worked with a publisher who had an editorial calendar that they refreshed weekly,” says Colo. “But they were changing articles just as they were reaching their maturity from a search perspective. Just as they hit maximum earning potential, they were taken off the site.”4. Context, not content is king, and that’s true for social media as well. “Now that you have a community tab, that doesn’t mean you have a community,” says Colo. “You want to make sure people can comment within articles and you need to show profiles in a contextual way, not just have them off in this dark community corner.” read more
The statement comes as Donald Trump at a media briefing with the visiting Pakistan PM Imran Khan in Washington offered to mediate on the Kashmir issue.ReutersIndia on Monday rebuffed US President Donald Trump’s offer to mediate on the Kashmir issue, saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had never made such a request to him, and stressed that all outstanding issues with Pakistan are “discussed only bilaterally”.”We have seen the US President’s remarks to the press that he is ready to mediate if requested by India and Pakistan, on the Kashmir issue. No such request has been made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US President,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said in a tweet.”It has been India’s consistent position that all outstanding issues with Pakistan are discussed only bilaterally. Any engagement with Pakistan would require an end to cross-border terrorism. The Simla Agreement & the Lahore Declaration provide the basis to resolve all issues between India & Pakistan bilaterally,” he said. The statement comes as US President Trump at a media briefing with the visiting Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan in Washington offered to mediate on the Kashmir issue, saying that Prime Minister Modi had broached the subject with him during their meeting in Osaka, Japan, last month.Trump said: “I was with Prime Minister Modi two weeks ago, and we talked about the subject. And he actually said, ‘would you like to be a mediator, or arbitrator’, and I said ‘where?’, and he said ‘Kashmir’, because this has been going on for many, many years. I was surprised for how long it has been going on,” to which Imran Khan interjected to say “70 years”.”I think they (India) would like to see it resolved, and I think you (Pakistan) would like to see it resolved. And if I can help, I would love to be mediator,” Trump said. read more

stars of Alice McDermott’s new novel The Ninth Hour they live to serve others But plenty has happened to those in their care These nuns in early 20th century Brooklyn help people in rock-bottom situations: a woman who’s lost her leg to a rabid dog children with life-threatening illnesses a wife whose husband commits suicide while she’s pregnant This last case is Annie an Irish immigrant who came to America for the man who would eventually widow her When their daughter Sally is born the sisters give Annie a job in the convent’s laundry and the twosome become lifelong associates of the nuns The job is a life raft little Sally has supervision down in that laundry room from infancy through adolescence first swaddled on a rug on the floor and later accommodated with a desk to do her homework But it’s a brutal way of life for Annie and the nun who oversees her Sister Illuminata filled with harsh detergents and scalding irons In this world of severe physical realities the simplest comforts are sublimely felt One nun finds happiness in the green smell that comes off a basket woven from unblessed palms when her own body heat warms it up; another tells a group of children that arriving in heaven will be like taking off an itchy too-tight wool coat: “When you finally get the old thing off the air in this house will feel as cool and as sweet as silk on your skin won’t it It will feel like cool water on the back of your neck and on your wrists … That’s how you’ll feel when you get to heaven” It’s very much in doubt whether all of these characters will get to heaven including the dead father whose suicide bars him from burial in hallowed ground Sin and virtue drive the novel and though several characters commit serious transgressions at least in the eyes of the church they are more often motivated by love than hate McDermott who frequently writes about Irish-American communities has as much affection for her characters as they have for one another Although the plot can be bleak it offers just enough warmth to nurture hope The nuns are full of solutions practical ones and sometimes superstitious ones to keep people moving through crises “one foot in front of the other” as the elderly Sister St Savior puts it Watching a pregnant Annie clutch at her hair immediately after her husband’s death Sister St Savior gently “moved Annie’s hand from out of her hair–it was a mad dramatic gesture that would lead to mad dramatic speech and placed her fingertips once again on her middle where her thoughts should be” McDermott’s That Night At Weddings and Wakes and After This have made her a Pulitzer finalist three times over She is a poet of corporeal description; Sally’s faint freckles for instance are “beneath the surface of her skin as if under a milky veil” But it’s the way she marries the spirit to the physical world that makes her work transcendent “Down here” says Sister Illuminata “we do our best to transform what is ugly soiled stained don’t we We send it back into the world like a resurrected soul We’re like the priest in his confessional aren’t we” For each other these women may actually serve a higher function than a priest in his confessional They keenly understand suffering and do what they can to alleviate each other’s The Ninth Hour is a story with the simple grace of a votive candle in a dark church Contact us at
