OTTAWA – The uneasy relationship between Canadian conservatives and controversial news outlet The Rebel garnered renewed attention Tuesday after one of the site’s co-founders and two of its contributors quit over its coverage of the Charlottesville protests.Co-founder Brian Lilley said he was no longer comfortable working with an organization increasingly linked with the alt-right, the name most commonly used to represent the white nationalist movement in the U.S. involved in the incidents in Virginia over the weekend.Among its leaders is Richard Spencer, whose manifesto written specifically for the Charlottesville event includes a call for states to be organized on racial and ethnic lines and speaks to the superiority of “White America.”The Rebel’s coverage suggested Spencer and his followers ought to be afforded the same rights as left-wing protesters who massed in opposition, Lilley said, and that was a tipping point for him.“They are not equivalent,” he said in an interview.“Black Lives Matter and (anti-fascists) need to be called out for their problems, but a Nazi, is a Nazi, is a Nazi. And I think we all agree that Nazis are bad.”National Post columnists Barbara Kay and John Robson also stepped away.Robson said on his web site he appreciated that the The Rebel had challenged political correctness, “But I now find the tone too unconstructive and think The Rebel has drifted too far from its mission of covering the news from a refreshing perspective.”Kay tweeted that most of the journalists at The Rebel are reasonable and humane. “It takes only one or two bad apples to spoil the brunch. And regrettably, that is what has happened to The Rebel.”Lilley said he had already made up his mind to quit when the other Rebel founder, Ezra Levant, published an all-staff memo trying to deflect the criticism that The Rebel is part of the alt-right movement.Coverage of the alt-right is not the same as being the alt-right, Levant said Tuesday. But he said as an outlet considered a trusted source for conservatives, a distinction needed to be publicly made.“It’s important that our viewers know that the alt-right is not actually conservative — they are socialist; they are communalist; they reject individual autonomy and subordinate everything to genetics,” he said in an email to The Canadian Press.“And most importantly, they are a false flag, by which leftist media can demonize all conservatives and pretend that white supremacists are the leading problem in America, rather than a tiny fringe.”Lilley’s choice to quit brought kudos from some federal Conservative MPs, among them deputy leader Lisa Raitt.“I admire a man who speaks what he believes. I wish you the best @brianlilley,” she posted on social media. But while she and others have condemned the violence and racism on display in Virginia, they’ve not responded to direct calls to explicitly disavow The Rebel.A petition by the advocacy group LeadNow calling on Conservative leader Andrew Scheer and his entire caucus to act drew over 4,200 signatures, but Scheer’s office would not comment.Doug Schweitzer, running for leadership of the United Conservative party in Alberta did publicly condemn The Rebel, saying it had evolved into a “platform for the alt-right.”Schweitzer has called on his competitors — Jason Kenney and Brian Jean — to follow his lead and cut ties, but neither has.Jean’s campaign manager, Hamish Marshall, is currently listed as part of The Rebel’s board of directors, but Levant says he is no longer on the board.Scheer did interviews over the course of the leadership campaign with The Rebel; with over 850,000 subscribers on YouTube, the site wields influence over the Tory rank-and-file.For some Tories, it’s too much influence — during the leadership race candidate Erin O’Toole told the Huffington Post he was frustrated that the outlet’s coverage of an anti-Islamaphobia motion in the House of Commons ended up defining the issue for many Tories.Others have previously broken ties with the outlet, among them Chris Alexander. He’d been pilloried during the leadership campaign for appearing to encourage chants at a Rebel rally of “lock her up” directed at Alberta Premier Rachel Notley. But when a Rebel commentator later did a piece with inflammatory statements about Jews and Israel, Alexander vowed to never return. On Monday, leadership candidate and Tory MP Michael Chong told a website run by the left-leaning Broadbent Institute that he’ll never appear on the site again after its coverage of Charlottesville, though he hadn’t done any interviews with them in over a year. read more
EDMONTON — The Alberta government has started a website to allow people to submit information to its inquiry into foreign funding of environmental groups.Inquiry commissioner Steve Allan says he is also planning to travel outside the province, with stops in Toronto, Vancouver, Haida Gwaii, B.C. and Washington, D.C.The inquiry is to also make use of American investigations into the activity of Russian social media bots in the United States. An interim report is expected by the end of next January. The province says public hearings may or may not be held.United Conservative Premier Jason Kenney, who has long argued that foreign-funded charities are deliberately trying to landlock Alberta resources, has said the inquiry has a budget of $2.5 million. The Canadian Press

It was a medieval Moroccan city that served as an important trade center in the Maghreb during the middle ages. In the year 1000, the city was inhabited by approximately 100,000 people. The ancient city experienced many invasions of several Amazigh (Berber) dynasties before it was abandoned in A.D. 1339.The initiative is part of the ministry’s strategy to preserve and enhance archaeological sites and historic monuments. The ministry has adopted a comprehensive and integrated approach to strengthen archaeological research in all Moroccan regions. The conference will be a platform for debate on the legal protection of Sijilmassa following its inclusion in the National Heritage list. read more
The announcement was made at a briefing by the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on “The Protection of East Timorese Children and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.” The event in Dili drew a wide range of government and UN officials, civil society groups and journalists.East Timorese Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri told the briefing that the Convention on the Rights of the Child is currently being considered by Parliament, which he expects will soon endorse East Timor’s adoption of the measure. The Prime Minister also said he hoped that the current generation of East Timor’s children that have been raised in a climate of violence will now be able to enjoy the country’s newly achieved stability.Mehr Kahn, the Director of UNICEF’s Southeast Asia regional office, opened the briefing by congratulating East Timor’s government for moving quickly since the country’s independence to bring about improvements and take many new and important initiatives.Ms. Khan also said she was “very encouraged to learn that when East Timor takes its place in the United Nations General Assembly in September, the Government hopes to be able to accede to the Convention on the Rights of the Child as well as other human rights instruments.”She also said she was pleased to see that East Timor’s recently adopted Constitution explicitly recognizes many of the fundamental rights enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. read more
The Food and Agricultural Agency’s (FAO) Food Price Index – which measures the monthly change in international prices for cereals, vegetable oils, dairy, meat and sugar – averaged 168 points in April. The figure is “down 1.8 per cent from March although remaining 10 percent higher than a year earlier,” according to FAO.The Sugar Price Index is down 9.1 per cent due to large export supplies from Brazil and a continued weak global import demand.Oil fell 3.9 per cent, pushed by weakening demand for palm oil and expectations of bumper soy harvests and planting in South and North America.Dairy also fell, about 3.3 per cent, while meat prices rose 1.7 per cent, led by a strong domestic demand for pork in the European Union and increased sale in China.FAO today also updated its global cereal production forecasts for 2017, projecting a likely 0.4 per cent annual decline despite stocks remaining close to their record high opening levels. The Cereal Supply and Demand Brief is expecting a drop in the in the cereal stocks-to-use ratio in 2017/18 to 25.8 per cent, “still a comfortably high figure in historical terms but slightly below the current season’s level,” the UN agency said. read more
Who would of guessed that old French men that drive tractors were so strong in the force. Looks are apparently deceiving as a elderly man driving his tractor gets into an argument with a group of men in a car.The two sides become increasingly agitated in the following video, and before you can say, “Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi,” the argument turns epic as the old man in blue ignites his lightsaber and takes a swipe at the car.AdChoices广告The following lightsaber duel is far from stellar, as let’s face it, Yoda would be appalled. It does, however, make one ponder what a world would be like if everyone carried lightsabers around. And even if it doesn’t, at least you can have a small chuckle at the film called, “Return of the Geriatric.”via YouTube
As reported by multiple sources, the 41 House and Senate conferees on the farm bill will meet on Wednesday, Oct. 30, to begin the process of reconciling the differences between the two bills. The opening session promises to be a lengthy one, as the process of the conference provides all 41 conferees an opportunity to make an opening statement on the legislation.Long-time Washington agriculture reporter Jerry Hagstrom wrote in Monday’s National Journal Daily, that there would be five areas of particular contention in the conference process. These are the nutrition title, crop insurance, commodity programs, dairy programs and food aid. While ASA has not weighed in on the debate over nutrition policy, the association does have a significant stake in several of the other issues, including commodity programs, crop insurance and food aid. With specific regard to commodity programs, ASA maintains that any agreement reached by the conferees must include payments that are decoupled from current-year planting decisions, in order to avoid the potential planting distortions and market disruptions that coupled payments can create. On food aid, ASA continues to oppose the replacement of in-kind aid with cash, and ASA has long maintained that soy farmers would part with direct payments provided the legislation strengthens the crop insurance program. That leaves the dairy program and the ever-debated nutrition title. It remains to be seen if conferees can bridge the gap between the House’s $40 billion cut to nutrition programs and the Senate’s $4 billion reduction. There is general consensus that this fight will be the conference’s most contentious one, and leadership has stated that it will likely be saved for the conference’s final sessions.ASA continues to work with our contacts in both chambers and will again provide our priorities to conferees before Wednesday’s opening session. read more

Share Rebuilding the Wortham may cost as much as $60 million. Losses incurred by all six performing companies based in the theater district add up to another $60 million. The Alley Theater — a nationally renowned resident theater — suffered a similar fate.“The water was 10 feet high…it just destroyed everything,” says Managing Director Dean Gladden, leading the way through the Alley’s flooded-out catacombs. Down here are the rooms that housed the theater’s irreplaceable prop collection: antique chandeliers, trunks, suitcases, telephones, period magazines.“We have everything that you would have in your house, this is 70 years of collecting props. All of our prop storage was underwater, 100 percent.”In the performance world, the paramount ethos is: the show must go on.And so it has.Scott Dalton/for NPR“All of our prop storage was underwater, 100 percent,” says Dean R. Gladden, managing director of the Alley Theatre. Flooding during Hurricane Harvey destroyed the theater’s irreplaceable prop collection. While renovation of the Alley’s flooded-out subterranean theater goes on, it is staging A Christmas Carol in its above-ground theater that was not damaged. The Houston Ballet — which also uses the Wortham — has moved its production of The Nutcracker to alternate venues around the city. The Houston Grand Opera never considered cancelling its season, either — from La Traviata to West Side Story. The company needed a new performance space, too, so they constructed a free-standing theater inside the cavernous George R. Brown Convention Center and named it Resilience Theater. It’s not the greatest acoustic space, but adequate for the recent premiere of a seasonal opera, The House Without A Christmas Tree.Managing director Leech had experience constructing a theater in a sports stadium in his native United Kingdom. So he knew he could do it here.“When we first looked at the convention center it was clear to me, who’d done something similar before, that we could do the show. Most of my colleagues were, like, no freakin’ way. And I was like, oh yeah, we can definitely do it.”The mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs has identified 71 arts groups, in all, that were impacted by Harvey. They range from the Wortham and the Alley to the Blue Triangle Community Center. This building, once a segregated YWCA, is home to a historic mural that is important to Houston’s black community.Stepping through a zipper opening to control humidity reveals a large wall painting in a style reminiscent of the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. It depicts abolitionists Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth and poet Phillis Wheatley, among other figures in African-American history.“It’s perfect for me to teach because I can tell students about the underground railroad,” says Charlotte Bryant, director of Blue Triangle.Scott Dalton/for NPRCharlotte Kelly Bryant, the Blue Triangle Multi-Cultural Association’s founding president, stands in front of the John Biggers’ 1953 mural, Contribution of Negro Women to American Life and Education, at the association’s headquarters in Houston’s Third Ward. The mural was damaged during Hurricane Harvey. The artist is John T. Biggers, a noted African-American muralist and educator. The building already had a leaky roof. Harvey’s 4 feet of rain penetrated the walls and drenched the painting.“If you look carefully you see little black spots,” Bryant says. “That’s where the mold was on.”For the past decade, the Blue Triangle has begged for money to replace the roof, but never had any luck. Now that its famous mural is moldering, there is a sense of urgency. It joins the Alley, the Grand Opera and others in a common fundraising plea — if you value Houston’s arts and culture, we need help. Scott Dalton/for NPRDean R. Gladden, managing director of the Alley Theatre, gives a tour of areas of the theatre that were damaged by flooding during Hurricane Harvey. One of the casualties of Hurricane Harvey has been parts of Houston’s thriving arts and culture community. Four days of torrential rainfall nearly drowned the city’s opera, ballet, and theater companies, along with a revered mural. But they’re drying out and starting over.On Aug. 28, as engorged Buffalo Bayou crept into Houston’s Theater District, Perryn Leech and Dean Gladden pulled on slickers and rubber boots and headed downtown for a look.Leech is the managing director of the Houston Grand Opera and Gladden heads the Alley Theater, next door.Their worst fears were confirmed. Dead fish lay in the street. A foul brew of bayou water and sewage had surged into the Theater District — for the first time ever — and gushed into their elegant performance buildings.“This room was an unholy mess,” says Leech. “We do know the water was coming in with some force and it was absolutely filthy water.”Scott Dalton/for NPRA view of Buffalo Bayou and downtown Houston. The dirt along the banks shows the extent of the flooding during Hurricane Harvey. In the Wortham Theater — home of the opera — Leech shows where floodwaters destroyed dressing rooms, storage areas, and mechanical and electrical installations. He heads down a corridor that’s being dried out by electric blowers on the floor and steps into a large room that has been stripped down to the cinderblock walls. In here, they lost costumes from the production of Julius Caesar, as well as thousands of shoes — from thigh-high boots to brocaded slippers. Then, there were the wigs.“This will give you an idea of some of the devastation. This was our wig shop. [We lost] 500 to 600 wigs, all made from human hair, each individually knotted, so a huge cash value. A wig can range anywhere from $1,500 to $2,500 to $3,000. And wigs are a big part of opera.” read more
