EDMONTON – Dinosaur hip bones unearthed by a University of Alberta paleontology student are shaking up the family tree of a group of small meat-eaters that lived 75 million years ago, and the student is paying tribute to his mother in the name of one of the new species for her unwavering support.Aaron van der Reest was doing field work in Dinosaur Provincial Park, about a two-hour drive southeast of Calgary, as part of his undergraduate studies in June 2014.It was starting to rain and the group was about to pack it in for the day, but there was a spot up the hill van der Reest and his partner wanted to check out.Close to a collection of small bone fragments, van der Reest spotted a bone sticking out that turned out to be the pelvis of what was believed to be a Troodon formosus — a dinosaur similar to the raptors seen in the Jurassic Park movies. It was uncommon for the remains of that species to be so well-preserved in North America, van der Reest said.“At that point I kind of started freaking out because I knew what it was right away and it was one of these exceptionally rare animals,” he said. There was something strange about the bones, though — the pubis bone was rotated backwards.“It’s the only of the more advanced troodontids that do this. Every other one, it’s directly pointing straight down,” said van der Reest.“We knew right away that it was something different. It represented something we had never seen before.”The hip bone discovery caused van der Reest to take a closer look at cranial bones that were previously collected in southern Alberta. As a result, Troodon formosus is no longer considered a valid species.Research published Tuesday in the Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences describes two new classifications that have taken its place. It’s possible even more species will be identified in the future. For one of the new species, van der Reest resurrected the name Stenonychosaurus inequalis. He called the other Latenivenatrix mcmasterae — a tribute to his late mother Lynne van der Reest, whose maiden name was McMaster. She died of cancer a year before the discovery. Before his mom fell ill, a shortage of money forced van der Reest to take a break from his studies. Toward the end of her life, they talked about how the money she left behind could be used to help him revisit his dream.“She looked at me and just told me if it was the last thing that she could do for me, that would be what she would choose.”Van der Reest said his mother always supported his ambition to become a paleontologist. When he was a young teen, she surprised him with tickets to see famed University of Alberta paleontologist Philip Currie give a talk in Sudbury, Ont.“I was just told to dress up in my suit and tie.”He found out when he got there that he’d be seated at the head table with his childhood hero.Years later, Currie would be his undergraduate supervisor. Currie is continuing in that role as van der Reest pursues his master’s degree.Van der Reest said he thinks his mother would find humour in having a dinosaur named after her.“I think she’d probably laugh at first,” he said.“She might have something to say about the fact that it was a meat-eating dinosaur.”— By Lauren Krugel in Calgary read more
Rabat – Chadian President Idriss Deby received Maroc Telecom Group Chairman Abdeslam Ahizoune earlier this week.Ahizoune went to talk to Deby on February 19 about Maroc Telecom’s probable entry into Chad’s telecommunications market.Ahizoune told the president that the group is strongly committed to supporting Chad’s digital development. The Chadian leader said that the government was ready to welcome any investor with open arms.Last year, Chad announced a plan to auction a new telecommunications licenses for mobile services. In recent years, the Chadian tax on mobile companies gradually increased. The tax rate was 4 percent in 2014, and then went up to 7 percent in 2016. In January 2018, the rate jumped to 9 percent. If Maroc Telecom enters the Chadian market, the group will have to face two foreign competitors—Luxembourg’s Tigo and India’s Bharti Airtel. But Airtel has said in the past that it might exit the Chadian market.Read also: Analyst: Morocco to Consider Selling ONDA, ONCF After Maroc TelecomChad would be Maroc Telecom’s 10th African markets. LAS VEGAS — Former U.S. Sen. Harry Reid has testified that his political career was cut short by a 2015 eye injury that he blames on an exercise band maker. The 79-year-old longtime Democratic leader told a jury hearing his lawsuit Friday that his eye and face injuries were “the main factor” in not seeking a sixth Senate term in 2016.Reid told jurors Wednesday that he spun and fell face-first against cabinets in his bathroom when a flexible TheraBand device he’d looped around a shower door handle slipped from his grip as he exercised.A company lawyer says Reid misused the device and the company isn’t at fault.Reid is suing Ohio-based Hygenic Corp. for damages. He claims civil negligence and failure to warn the public that the device is dangerous. The Associated Press
21 April 2010A new United Nations-supported study released today shows that countries forged ahead with low-carbon growth economic strategies in the first quarter of this year despite the uncertainty surrounding international climate negotiations. The annual Climate Competitiveness Index (CCI), produced by the independent non-profit institute AccountAbility in partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) investigated “climate accountability” to validate if a country’s climate strategy is clear, ambitious and supported by stakeholders and “climate performance” to consider each country’s capabilities and track record on delivering its strategy. The Index, released at this year’s Business for the Environment Summit in Seoul, analyzed 95 countries responsible for 97 per cent of global economic activity and 96 per cent of global carbon emissions. It concludes that despite gaps in performance and accountability, 46 per cent of countries demonstrated some improvement in climate accountability since the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) conference in Copenhagen in December last year.Thirty-two countries made significant improvements, with Germany, China and the Republic of Korea being the outstanding examples. India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, the Philippines and Rwanda also enhanced their climate accountability.“This report comes as a breath of fresh air,” said Alex MacGillivray, Managing Director at AccountAbility. “The CCI shows that countries at all levels of development can develop political leadership, stronger institutions and engaging with stakeholders to deliver climate competitiveness.“Climate competitiveness is no longer rhetoric. It is a real, massive and dynamic economic frontier. This latest analysis proves that governments are seizing opportunities for green growth and making significant strides to tackle the climate crisis,” he added.Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Japan and France show the most consistent progress on combining accountability and performance. Switzerland and Austria are strong on performance, while the United Kingdom and United States are strong on accountability. The Republic of Korea, Hong Kong and Malaysia are developing good strategies and Brazil, South Africa, India and China are progressing towards climate competitiveness. The CCI predicts that the global market for low carbon products and services will be in excess of $2 trillion by 2020. However, to secure this market, countries need ambitious climate competitiveness strategies, as well as the institutional infrastructure to build markets and convince investors, it notes. It concludes that business must play a proactive role in promoting climate competitiveness. Countries that perform well on the CCI have a critical mass of firms managing, reporting on and reducing their emissions, while aggressively growing portfolios of low carbon products and services. In a related development, UNEP released a new publication to help companies understand how they can be part of the transition to low-carbon, resource-efficient green economy. The agency said biodiversity is a building block for the natural system on which much of the world’s wealth depends directly or indirectly, yet too few in business realize the extent of the risks and potential rewards of managing their impact on this key nature-based asset. The publication, previewed at the summit in Seoul, entitled Are you a green leader? Business and biodiversity: making the case for a lasting solution, examines a broad spectrum of business, including mining, energy, agrifoods, fisheries and aquaculture, construction, forestry, tourism, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, fashion and finance.“Many sectors rely on raw materials such as timber, fish, cotton, crops and clean water, or work with supplies and suppliers throughout the life-cycle of production processes,” UNEP said in a statement. “But many do not realize how threatened those supplies are, and fail to include this in their calculations and business plans.” read more

That’s up 9.2 per cent from 2011 and the most since 2007. Sales are still below the roughly 5.5 million that are consistent with a healthy market.Sales dipped in December to a pace of 4.94 million, down from 4.99 million in November. November’s figure was revised lower, but was still the highest in three years. The supply of available homes is shrinking as sales rise. That’s pushing up prices. The inventory of homes for sale dropped to 1.82 million in December, the lowest in 12 years.Still, the housing market is recovering and most analysts expect that should continue this year.Steady hiring, record-low mortgage rates and a tight supply of new and previously occupied homes available for sale have helped boost sales and prices in most markets.A measure of U.S. home prices rose 7.4 per cent annually in November, real estate data provider CoreLogic said last week. That’s the biggest annual increase since 2006, when the housing bubble began to burst. CoreLogic forecasts that home prices will rise 6 per cent nationally this year.Rising demand for homes has persuaded builders to step up construction, which adds to economic growth and hiring.U.S. builders started work on homes in December at the fastest pace in 4 1/2 years, the government said last week. And builders finished 2012 as their best year for residential construction since the early stages of the housing crisis. The gains in home building helped boost construction hiring in December by 30,000 jobs — the most in 15 months. by Christopher S. AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email by Ross Marowits, The Canadian Press Posted Feb 26, 2014 4:10 pm MDT MONTREAL – Canam Group says its heavy structural steel business is on the upswing after lining up $191 million worth of new projects in Canada and the United States over the next few years, including the new home for the Edmonton Oilers NHL hockey team.“It’s an up and down business. We feel we’re going into an up period now,” CEO Marc Dutil said during a conference call Wednesday after releasing the company’s fourth-quarter and year-end results.North America’s largest fabricator of steel products for the construction industry said its net income surged 45 per cent to $10.8 million for the three months ended Dec. 31.That translated into 26 cents per share of earnings, up from 18 cents per share or $7.4 million a year earlier. Revenue rose to $281.6 million from $238.5 million.Dutil said the Quebec-based company had expected its structural steel division to performed better last year, but the pipeline of opportunities is now starting to get busy.“We believe recent projects awarded in this division will help us continue improving results in 2014,” Dutil told analysts.Canam (TSX:CAM) said steel for Edmonton’s Rogers Place that is slated to open in the fall of 2016 will be fabricated in Calgary and St. Gedeon de Beauce, Que., with deliveries starting in August.Other projects include a retractable roof for Arthur Ashe Stadium, which is used for the U.S. Open tennis tournament, a 23-storey building at a New York University medical centre and a 47-storey high-rise office tower in New York City.In addition to fabricating and erecting steel components, the Structal-Heavy Steel Constructive division’s role will include design-build, detailing and project management services for the projects. The projects are in addition to about $30-million worth of jobs announced earlier in the year for work related to Montreal’s Turcot highway and a project in Ontario. For the full year, the company’s net profit jumped to $31.2 million or 74 cents per share from $17 million or 40 cents per share in 2012. Consolidated revenue rose to $1.028 billion from $905 million.Canam had been expected to earn 25 cents per share on $276.7 million of revenues in the quarter, and 66 cents on $1.02 billion of revenues for the year, according to analysts polled by Thomson Reuters. The increase in revenues last year was mainly attributable to light structural steel and joist and steel deck activities, which were helped by a gradual recovery in non-residential construction activities in the United States, and by acquisitions.Canam ended 2013 by acquiring a 67 per cent stake in Massif Technologies, an engineering company renamed Structure Fusion, that specializes in the design and management of non-residential projects using lumber framing. Last summer, it acquired the steel joist fabrication assets of Quincy Joist Company, which employs 70 people in Arizona and Florida.Excluding the recent project announcements, the company’s backlog of orders increased 20 per cent to $592 million, up from $493 million at the end of 2012.Canam recently settled two claims related to its work on BC Place in Vancouver, including one that abruptly ended a trial that began Feb. 17.“We feel there are no winners in these settlements. We are just glad we can now move on to more constructive issues,” Dutil told analysts. As part of the contract awarded to rapidly relocate Lac Megantic’s commercial centre following the deadly crash last summer, Canam said it donated more than $325,000 to the community with the help of suppliers.Sara O’Brien of RBC Capital Markets said the results in the fourth-quarter were helped by a tax recovery.“We view today’s results as net neutral to negative on earnings but positive regarding backlog growth in the first quarter and continued expectation for operating leverage into the second half of the fiscal year,” she wrote in a report.Canam Group operates 21 plants across North America and employs 3,600 people in Canada, the United States, Romania, India and Hong Kong.On the Toronto Stock Exchange, Canam’s shares hit a 52-week high of $14.59 in Wednesday trading and closed at $14.35, up 41 cents or 2.94 per cent.Follow @RossMarowits on Twitter Canam wins $191 million worth of projects, including new Edmonton Oilers arena read more
“We should not reach the point in this conflict where people become numb to the atrocious killing of civilians,” said the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay. “The increasingly brutal nature of the conflict makes international efforts to halt the bloodshed imperative […] but we need a much greater sense of urgency.” Images of piles of bloodied and burned bodies, including of small children and babies, have been emerging – allegedly taken after Government forces and militia overran al-Bayda and other parts of Baniyas last week. “These images, if verified, indicate a complete lack of regard for the lives of civilians,” Ms. Pillay said. “There needs to be a careful investigation of each and every incident like this.”Ms. Pillay also expressed alarm at reports of a major military build-up around the western town of Qusayr, saying she feared further atrocities if the area was overrun. According to her Office (OHCHR), Government forces and pro-Government militias around the area have been displacing local civilian population, in preparation of what could be a large-scale attack to uproot the armed opposition.“Violence to life and person, in particular murder of all kinds, mutilation, cruel treatment and torture, constitute very serious crimes,” she said. “Our concern is all the greater given recent information reaching our team on the ground in neighbouring countries that Government forces are continuing to resort to indiscriminate and disproportionate use of force in residential areas.” Witnesses, many of whom had suffered serious injury such as loss of limbs, told UN human rights monitors their homes had been shelled during attacks from February to mid-April. “We are getting consistent testimonies that suggest Government forces are directly targeting key life-sustaining entities such as bakeries and pharmacies, hospitals and schools where civilians are sheltering,” Ms. Pillay said. “Depending on the circumstances, these attacks may constitute war crimes and/or crimes against humanity.”Opposition forces have also committed human rights violations as anti-Government groups operate and hide within densely populated areas, endangering civilians. They are also increasingly resorting to abductions and the taking of hostages, and Ms. Pillay said she is particularly concerned by allegation that some fighters are engaging in forced marriages.Ms. Pillay renewed her call to refer the situation in Syria to the International Criminal Court (ICC). “I believe that serious human rights violations and other acts amounting to war crimes and/or crimes against humanity have been committed. We must make it clear to both the Government and the armed opposition groups that there will be clear consequences for the people responsible for these crimes.” read more
The agency’s new Asylum Trends report says that, based on historical trends showing higher numbers of asylum-seekers in the second half of each year, 2014 could produce as many as 700,000 claims – which would make it the highest level in industrialized countries in 20 years, and a level not seen since the 1990s conflict in former Yugoslavia. In a press release, UNHCR said applications for refugee status in industrialized countries are just one element in the global picture of forced displacement from wars and conflict, which number more than 51 million. Most remain either internally displaced within their own countries.“We are clearly into an era of growing conflict,” said UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres.“The global humanitarian system is already in great difficulty,” he said. “The international community needs to prepare their populations for the reality that in the absence of solutions to conflict more and more people are going to need refuge and care in the coming months and years. Unfortunately, it is not clear that the resources and the access to asylum will be available to help them.”According to the UNHCR report, which is based on data received from 44 governments in Europe, North America and parts of the Asia-Pacific, said 330,700 people asked for refugee status in these 44 countries between the start of January and the end of June. The figure marks a rise of 24 percent from the same period a year earlier, and slightly higher than in the second half of last year (328,100 claims).Overall, Syria was the main country of origin of people seeking asylum with a more than two-fold increase (48,400 claims compared to 18,900 in the same period in 2013). Iraq, where hundreds of thousands of people have become newly displaced this year, produced 21,300 asylum applications, followed by Afghanistan (19,300) and Eritrea (18,900).Of the net overall increase in new claims shown in the report, more than two thirds of these were in just six countries – Germany, the United States, France, Sweden, Turkey and Italy. The report said Central Europe, in particular Hungary and Poland, as well as Australia saw declines in the numbers of people asking to be accepted as refugees. Australia had just 4,600 claims (a 20 per cent fall from a year earlier), while in Poland the number dropped to 3,300 (65 per cent lower) and in Hungary to 4,800 (58 per cent lower).UNHCR publishes data on worldwide forced displacement in its annual Global Trends report. Reports on asylum in industrialized countries are normally published twice annually. read more

With admirable alacrity, Mozilla has just released the latest beta version of Firefox 4, their next-gen browser, and while it’s primarily a bug fix release, it notably adds a couple of neat new features. What’s new? On the Windows platform, beta 9 ships with a new feature that allows Firefox’s tabs to reside in the Windows title bar, maximizing the browser’s horizontal space. Pretty neat.Additionally, Firefox 4 beta 9 comes with support for IndexedDB, which allows sites that you have approved to store data on your computer for offline use.AdChoices广告Other improvements in Firefox 4 beta 9 include an overhaul of the bookmarks and history code, which should enable both faster bookmarking and Firefox’s startup performance. In addition to the new features, beta 9 fixes over 660 bugs, and in our experience is the fastest and stablest beta yet. That’s not to say we aren’t likely to see a beta 10, though: there’s still some wonkiness in the new Pandora tab-sorting interface. If you’d like to grab the latest beta, it can be grabbed directly from Mozilla’s site. It should prove stable enough to use right now, although if you’d prefer to wait, it seems likely that Firefox 4 final will land sometime in February.Read more at Mozilla read more
If you think I’m crazy with this column, check out how I described dogs as Democrats and cats as Republicans in this 2007 column:Pets have their own politicsAmericans would be better served if Congress were run like a jazz big band. Popularity ratings of our national ruling body would soar from the current all-time low to the heights of approval enjoyed by countless jazz big bands that have decorated American music for nine decades.I confess to a certain bias in this discussion. My world is drenched in jazz. If I were to buy a personalized license plate, it would probably be: CT BASIE. The Count and other big-band virtuosos offer me a daily refuge. After a busy day of crouching on the curb and watching the political parade wobble and lurch before me, I retreat to Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich, Doc Severinsen, Big Phat Band and others for solace.Any comparison of Congress and big bands leads to this inevitable conclusion about musicians: Brass are Republicans, and woodwinds are Democrats. The brass section of any big band consists of three instruments: trumpets, trombones and … uh … I forgot the third one. Oops! But anyway, brass players are the morally upright members of a big band. You can tell just by looking at them that they’re more patriotic, more religious. Yeah, they’re a little loud and brash sometimes, with a certain “Don’t Tread on Me” defensiveness. But like Republicans, brass players are reliable and rigid in their devotion to traditional jazz doctrine. When brass players stand and take the spotlight in a jazz band, they project a certain Glaringly Ostentatious Performance. This GOP approach aggravates the woodwinds, of course, but it plays well to the base and invigorates brass admirers in the audience. read more
Image credit: Allen and OveryInternational law firm Allen and Overy has reported a 19.8% mean gender pay gap for fixed hourly pay as at 5 April 2017.The organisation has reported its gender pay gap data in line with the government’s gender pay gap reporting regulations and ahead of the private sector submission deadline of 4 April 2018.The gender pay gap reporting regulations require organisations with 250 or more employees to publish the difference between both the mean and median hourly rate of pay for male and female full-time employees; the difference between both the mean bonus pay and median bonus pay for male and female employees; the proportions of male and female employees who were awarded bonus pay; and the proportions of male and female full-time employees in the lower, lower middle, upper middle and upper quartile pay bands.Allen and Overy’s median gender pay gap for fixed hourly pay as at 5 April 2017 is 27.4%.Its mean gender pay gap for bonuses paid in the year to 5 April 2017 is 42.1%, and the median gender pay gap for bonus payments is 23%. Over this period, 53.2% of female employees received a bonus payment compared to 55.5% of male employees.More than half (52%) of employees in the highest pay quartile at Allen and Overy are female, compared to 53% in the second quartile, 63% in the third quartile and 71% in the lowest pay quartile.Allen and Overy attributes its gender pay gap to the gender composition of its workforce. For example, more than 25% of employees based at Allen and Overy’s London office are women employed in lower-paid administrative business support roles. Men within the organisation, on the other hand, occupy fewer administrative roles. The law firm believes its gender pay gap for bonus payments is influenced by the fact that more women than men work on a part-time basis, which means they receive a pro-rated bonus. In addition, Allen and Overy notes that the role diversity in its highest pay quartile also impacts on bonus ranges, as female employees hold senior positions. The firm’s analysis further shows that its mean gender pay for bonuses in the lower three quartiles is less than 4%, however this rises to 22.2% for its highest pay quartile. To address its gender pay gap, Allen and Overy has renewed its gender strategy this year. The firm has also established a Gender Advisory Committee and introduced rigorous reporting across all offices in order to monitor its talent pipeline and track how well the organisation is sponsoring and progressing its female employees. Allen and Overy is additionally building a more flexible working culture so that all employees can be supported to work in ways that suit their lives.Currently, one third of Allen and Overy’s elected board members are female, compared to 30% of women on its executive committee, 50% of female employees on its risk committee and 42% of the organisation’s people and performance board are female.Wim Dejonghe, senior partner at Allen and Overy (pictured), and Sasha Hardman, global HR director at Allen and Overy, said in the report: “To reduce our gender pay gap, we recognise that we need to create a better gender balance in the top levels of our organisation.“This is one of our top strategic business priorities, and we have implemented a number of changes in recent years to ensure we continue to make progress on this issue. The benefits of a diverse workforce, with a genuinely inclusive culture, are very clear. We know that diverse teams drive originality and innovation, mitigate risks from ‘group-think’, lead to greater engagement at work, and build stronger client relationships. This is why diversity remains a top priority for us.” read more
The Education Foundation of the Bristol Bay Native Corporation has sold its donated stock in the company that’s seeking to develop the proposed Pebble Mine. Back in early April the major mining company Rio Tinto divested itself of its 19-percent interest in the proposed Pebble Mine.To the surprise of nearly everyone, the company gave its stock investment to two non-profit organizations. The Bristol Bay Native Corporation’s Education Foundation was one of the recipients of the Northern Dynasty Minerals stock. They received about 9-million shares. The Foundation announced the sale of that stock on Friday for over $6.4-million. The sale was apparently completed on June 10th. The money will be used to support the Foundation’s scholarship programs and will also be used to develop a cultural heritage program. The Foundation’s Executive Director released a statement Friday noting that occupations that require higher levels of education and training are growing and the costs to attend post-secondary training are increasing She also pointed out that more and more BBNC shareholders are applying for scholarships through the foundation. The Bristol Bay Native Corporation’s Education Foundation was created back in 1991 and it’s overseen by a Board of Directors that is separate from the Board that controls the Bristol Bay Native Corporation. The Foundation only serves BBNC shareholders or their relations. The other 9-million shares of Northern Dynasty Minerals stock was given by Rio Tinto to the Alaska Community Foundation for the creation of a new workforce development initiative called the “Vocational Fund for Alaska’s Future.” That fund has a goal of supporting programs to train Alaskans for careers in mining. That includes new training programs. ACF currently holds over $70-million over 300-different funds. read more

Arizona is loaded with running backs in Tim Hightower, Beanie Wells and recent draft pick Ryan Williams. For a team like Arizona that doesn’t seem to even like running the ball, it would seem obvious that there won’t be enough touches for all three of Arizona’s running backs.“If it’s a back-up running back the Philadelphia Eagles want, the Cardinals have plenty of those to include in a deal for Kevin Kolb. That’s a great idea,” said Burns. One would think that just a back-up running back like a Hightower or a Wells wouldn’t be enough alone to acquire Kolb, but it’s possible if Arizona throws in a second or third-rounder that might be enough. The deal would make sense because Philly is dealing from a position in strength in quarterback while the Cardinals could also deal from a position of strength in running back.Basically, both teams could help the other without creating a hole somewhere else on their rosters.Let’s see if this trade scenario builds any steam over the next few weeks or until the lockout is finally over. PHOENIX – The talk surrounding the Arizona Cardinals pursuit of Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb has centered around what players such as Daryl Washington or Dominique Rodgers Cromartie or draft picks it would require to pry the Philly signal-caller to the desert. However, a new possibility has emerged that could make more sense for both teams to find a acceptable deal for both.“The Eagles might be in the market for a back-up running back. Is that potentially a reason why the Cardinals have some many running backs on the roster?” said Dave Burns on the Sports 620 KTAR’s Sports Interactive show on Friday. For further information on taking part in any ILTM event, please see www.iltm.comGo back to the e-newsletter Go back to the e-newsletterLATTE chats with Alison Gilmore, director – The ILTM Collection, about its recent changes, innovations and new events, and the changing landscape of luxury tourism. 1. Alison, can you tell us a bit more about the ILTM Collection? The ILTM Collection provides the luxury travel industry with platforms to do business and build relationships. Each event invites individual regional travel advisors, agents and planners looking to create private leisure itineraries for their clients.Alongside the global flagship events in Cannes and Asia Pacific, ILTM has four core local events; ILTM North America, ILTM Arabia, ILTM China and ILTM Latin America, as well as two specialist inbound events: ILTM Africa and ILTM Japan. The ILTM brand is also providing knowledge, not only through experiences on the show floor created by every individual exhibitor, but also through thought leaders who provide analysis, research, opinions and trends either at the ILTM Opening Forum or through individual reports available to every one of our attendees.2. Tell us more about your new event ILTM Asia Pacific? These are two new dynamic events dedicated to their own audiences: ILTM Asia Pacific in Singapore, 21 – 24 May, welcoming luxury travel buyers and agents from 21 countries across the region and ILTM China in Shanghai, 31 October – 2 November 2018, welcoming exclusively Chinese buyers.ILTM Asia Pacific in the modern, efficient city of Singapore will be international in look and feel and influenced by this modern city that is so famous for its history, beauty, values and traditions – Singapore really can deliver the very best of mixing business with pleasure.3. In addition, can you tell us more about ILTM China?ILTM China is key to every luxury travel supplier who wants to remain focused on the continually growing outbound market. Every year we see a big increase in the number of Chinese luxury travel planners wanting to attend ILTM and with this new style of event we can now increase our number of buyers dramatically.4. And what about the two specialist inbound events: ILTM Japan and ILTM Africa? All of the events within the ILTM Collection are open to global luxury travel brands. But ILTM Japan (26 – 28 February 2018 in Tokyo) and ILTM Africa (15 – 17 April 2018 in Cape Town) are platform for brands from within these specific countries to meet with international buyers. Ideal for either Japanese or African travel specialists from across the world to understand more about the region as well as research and visit new properties in each region. For ILTM Japan, the combination of the relaxation in visa restrictions, the impending Rugby World Cup, the Olympics in 2020 and the Winter Olympics has led the Japanese government to planning upgrades to airports and seaports, as well as improving access to national parks and cultural attractions – the inbound experience is only going to get better. The perceived simplicity of Japanese culture continues to be extremely appealing to visitors, particularly as the Japanese experience combines both the modern and the traditional concepts ofluxury.Africa is proving to be the growth story of the 21st century – the variety of beautiful locations available to the luxury traveller throughout the continent is huge. As more hotels are developed (5,000 new rooms in 210 new hotels are already planned to open in Africa by 2018), this story of success for African tourism is only going to continue.5. And Travelweek Sao Paolo has now rebranded to become ILTM Latin America? How does this event differ from ILTM North America in Mexico? In 2018 Travelweek Sao Paolo becomes ILTM Latin America, the event stays the same in format and location, and the dates will be 8 -11 May. The change of name brings the event into the portfolio brand with its name now clearly highlighted as an ILTM event and it also identifies the region that it supports, the 15 key Latin American source markets. This name change does not in anyway change or affect ILTM North America in Riviera Maya – which is an event for international luxury travel brands and experiences who are looking to connect with front line buyers and agents from Mexico, Canada and the US.6. How do you think luxury tourism has changed in the last 10 years? We are now immersed in a world of ‘transformational travel’ – the biggest change in luxury travel since the dawn of the boutique hotel in the 1980s.Travellers are now questioning their own sets of values and looking for travel experiences that deliver simplicity, mindfulness and transformation.Today, it’s not enough for luxury brands to focus on demographics – ‘psychographics’ are what is defining luxury tourism today. In 2017 and beyond, luxury travel brands must be able to adapt to their customers’ personalities and needs in order to win their loyalty, love and ultimately their ongoing business.7. And finally, what defines a luxury travel experience for you?Three words: culture, cuisine and customisation! Like many luxury travellers, I really welcome the opportunity to learn something new; perhaps about cultural heritage or local arts or luxury products that showcase traditions and techniques. At the same time, cuisine is key. Whether in taking local cooking classes, using a culinary experience as a trip theme (as in wine region tourism), or dining at finerestaurants around the world, cuisine is a priority of the luxury travel currency. And lastly but definitely not least, customisation allows luxury travellers to orchestrate their own unique travel experiences, which is key to the luxury traveller today. The more choices luxury travellers are allowed and the greater the support given in making these choices, the better the experience – a strong incentive to entice repeat business. read more
In 2013, a total of 1,003 people died from heart attacks and strokes in Cyprus, according to a Eurostat report published on Wednesday. Some 637 died from heart attacks, 12.2 per cent of all deaths, a figure which is roughly the same as in 2004. Another 366 deaths were caused by strokes. This represents a share of total deaths of 7 per cent, down from 2004 when it was 7.8 per cent. Both percentages place Cyprus among the countries with slightly better records than the European Union average. In the EU in 2013, heart attacks (around 644,000 deaths) and strokes (almost 433,000 deaths) accounted for slightly more than one in five deaths. Since 2000 however, the share of both fatal heart attacks and fatal strokes has continuously decreased in the EU from being responsible for 16.6 per cent and 11.5 per cent respectively of all deaths in 2000 to 12.9 per cent and 8.7 per cent in 2013 despite an increasingly ageing population.Lithuania tops the list with more than a third of all deaths due to heart attacks in 2013.By contrast, heart attacks accounted for a mere six per cent of all causes of death in France. Regarding deaths from strokes, the highest proportions were registered in 2013 in Bulgaria (19.7 per cent). At the opposite end of the scale is France with a share of 5.7 per cent.An analysis by age groups clearly shows that the risk of dying from a heart attack or a stroke increases with age, with heart attacks and strokes being responsible for less than 10 per cent of all deaths among people aged below 40 in the EU, between 10 and 20 per cent for those aged 40 to 69 and for over 20 per cent for the older age groups.
