Atmospheric tides play a critical role in the dynamics and coupling of mesosphere and lower-thermosphere (MLT). Global Circulation Models (GCMs) that aim to span the lower, middle and upper atmosphere must therefore be capable of reproducing the tides and observations of tides are thus crucial to constrain the models. Here we present the first climatology of the 12- and 24-h tides measured at heights of 80–100 km by a meteor radar over the Antarctic station of Rothera (68°S, 68°W). We use observations of tides from 2009 in the first test of two GCMs at these latitudes: the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM) and the extended Canadian Middle Atmosphere Model (eCMAM, 24-h tide only). Our radar observations reveal large-amplitude 12- and 24-h tides which display a distinct seasonal variability. The 12-h tide maximises around the equinoxes, reaching daily-mean amplitudes of about 40 ms−1. The 24-h tide is generally of smaller amplitude and maximises in summer. The observed 12-h tide increases greatly in amplitude with increasing height over the range 80–100 km, whereas the 24-h tide generally does not do so. Comparison with the models shows that, for the 12-h tide, WACCM reproduces the observed amplitudes at heights near 80 km quite well, but does not reproduce either the strong observed increase with height or the equinoctial maxima. For the 24-h tide, WACCM reproduces the observed small variation in amplitude with height, but suggests amplitudes somewhat larger than those observed whilst eCMAM generally reproduces the observed tidal amplitudes and the small variation of amplitude with height. The radar observations reveal great day-to-day variability in the amplitude of both tides, much of which is quasi periodic and occurs at periods similar to those of planetary waves, suggesting that it originates in non-linear tidal/planetary-wave coupling. The observed and model background winds display some notable differences, particularly in winter when eastward winds are observed at all heights but not reproduced in the models. We propose that these differences may arise from the lack of in-situ gravity-wave sources in the models and that this may also account for some of the differences apparent between the observed and modelled tides. read more
FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmaildomnicky/iStock(HOUSTON) — Kacy Clemens, the son of MLB legend Roger Clemens, and the pitcher’s godson, Conner Capel, filed suit against a bar on Wednesday, saying a bouncer roughed the two men up at a New Year’s party. The suit was filed in the District Court of Harris County, Texas, against Concrete Cowboy, a bar in western Houston, where the two men allege they were beaten up by a bouncer “without warning or provocation.”“As they approached the bar, and before making a purchase of any kind, a Concrete Cowboy bouncer told Clemens and Capel to move,” the lawsuit alleges. “Clemens and Capel complied with the request, but apparently not to the liking of the Concrete Cowboy bouncer.”“Without warning or provocation, the bouncer became upset at Plaintiffs when he suddenly and violently began attacking Capel and Clemens together, in an attempt to throw them out of the bar,” the suit continues. “Others joined in and physically assaulted Capel and Clemens, causing injuries to both young men.”Clemens, 24, plays baseball in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. Unlike his father, who won seven Cy Youngs in 24 seasons as a starting pitcher, Kacy is a position player. He finished last season in High-A ball with the Dunedin Blue Jays, where he hit .212 with five home runs and 40 RBI in 95 games. He was an eighth-round draft pick by Toronto in 2017.Capel, 21, is from Katy, Texas, near Houston, and also plays baseball. He is in High-A ball with the St. Louis Cardinals where he hit .248 in 29 games after a midseason trade from Cleveland.“The culture of Concrete Cowboy needs to be exposed for what it is — bouncers who make it their mission to brutalize and assault patrons who they perceive to not follow their orders,” attorney Randy Sorrels told Houston ABC station KTRK-TV. “The bouncers picked on the wrong group of innocent young men in this instance and we intend to bring the employees, managers and owners of Concrete Cowboy to justice.”Sorrels said he is concerned for both players’ health with the baseball season right around the corner. Clemens suffered an injury to his throwing arm, while Capel was allegedly hit in the head with a flashlight and suffered a gash to his forehead and bruising to his chest and abdomen.Police who arrived at the scene in the wake of the New Year’s incident arrested one bouncer, according to the suit. The lawsuit seeks monetary relief of “over $200,000.00 but not more than $1,000,000.00 at this time.”KTRK and ABC News reached out to Concrete Cowboy for comment, but had not received a response.Kacy is one of four children by the ex-Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees legend. He is the second youngest of four boys. Three of the four were drafted, though none have made the majors.Roger Clemens himself has been tied up in legal drama since his playing career ended in 2007, mostly due to allegations of performance-enhancing drugs. He has always denied using PEDs, but the claims have likely kept him out of the Hall of Fame.Clemens has seen an increase in votes in each of the past five years, but he still received just 59.5 percent in 2019 — well short of the 75 percent needed for entry.Copyright © 2019, ABC Radio. Lewis Hamilton clinched his fourth Formula One driver’s title to become Britain’s most successful driver in the history of the sport and to tie with Sebastian Vettel as joint third most successful driver in F1 history.Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won his second race in 2017 but the major highlight of the race was Vettel hitting Hamilton’s car in the rear just on the first lap.“Did he hit me deliberately?” Hamilton asked over team radio.Vettel and Hamilton had to pit after the first lap but Hamilton found himself in a very difficult situation as he emerged out of the pit 30 seconds behind the Ferrari. He had to struggle to be in points scoring position and even though he finished in ninth place, Vettel’s inability to win the race ensured the title race ended in New Mexico.Hamilton’s title win ensures the final two races are as dead rubber as it comes, Vettel would hope though, that he and Ferrari try to end the season on a positive note going into 2017.With the speed and flexibility of the Ferrari and the organised tactical and administrative know-how of Mercedes, this direct rivalry surely looks like it will be the highlight of 2018. How well the Red Bulls and Fernando Alonso’s McLaren – both to be powered by Renault – will be in terms of upsets is left to be seen. For the here and now, Lewis Hamilton is the Formula One World Champion.Related read more
